A Speech By His Honour the Honourable John Hardy OAM, Administrator of the Northern Territory

On the Occasion of the Sri Lankan New Year Celebration Dinner and Dance, Cyprus Community Hall, Darwin

Saturday 18 April 2015

Good evening everyone, and thank you for warmly welcoming Marie and me to your special event this evening.
Before tonight, we had seen photos from your previous New Year celebrations and were impressed by the vibrant colour of the traditional dress of your dancers. To see this brought to life in the first dance tonight is a lot of fun, and we look forward to the rest of the performances.

I understand that the Sri Lanka Australia Friendship Association was started over three decades ago as a way of providing a friendly network for new arrivals to Darwin, and to build links between Sri Lankans and locals. Back then, this was a fairly small group of only a few families. Looking around the room tonight, we can all see that these links have clearly expanded and strengthened in that time.

Just over four decades ago Marie and I were also newcomers to Darwin. We moved here from Broken Hill in New South Wales with our four children, and we added a fifth to our family a couple of years later. Like most who find themselves relocating somewhere new, we were keen to meet people and to make social connections. We joined clubs and got involved in our children’s school. And we enjoyed the opportunities that this provided to make long lasting friendships.

The different events that your Association organizes each year sound like a great way to do just that. And at the same time you are also celebrating the Sri Lankan culture, which is so rich and diverse in its fine arts, music, cuisine and sport.

I don’t want to delay you from the dancing and delicious food, but before I finish I want to share a snippet from a book titled Links Between Australia & Sri Lanka. In 1988 the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia, Wickrema Weerasooria, wrote this book as a social history of Sri Lankans who had migrated to Australia. He gathered stories from people he met during his time as High Commissioner, and collected information through methods such as a questionnaire that he distributed through Sri Lankan clubs and associations around the country.

One person whom he met during his travels around Australia was Upali Ranasinghe, your Association’s President from 1985 to 1990. Mr Ranasinghe was incredibly active in the community. Amongst other things, he was an inaugural member of the Multilingual Broadcasting Association of the NT, honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in the Northern Territory, and he was instrumental in the establishment of The International Buddhist Centre here in Darwin.

In his book, Mr Weerasooria quotes an extract from Mr Ranasinghe’s account of life in the Territory. It states:
“The casual lifestyle is the keynote of the Top End and especially Darwin. A pool or spa is not considered a luxury. It is a focus for entertaining friends at a backyard barbeque, and relaxation for the family. Sri Lankan migrants who packed two or three suits and several dozen ties when they left Sri Lanka, now find that they have to spend a small fortune in moth balls to preserve the attire that is never worn in the Territory.”

This is an observation that no doubt still rings true for newcomers to the Territory today.
Thank you once again for welcoming Marie and me tonight, and congratulations on organizing such a fun-filled evening.
Thank you.

Sri Lankan Catholics in Darwin can now celebrate the Holy Eucharist in the Sinhala language once a month at the Holy Spirit Church, Casuarina.

Rev Fr Herman Perera from Sri Lanka has been appointed to serve in the Northern Territory for a period of three years. The Mass is scheduled for the last Sunday of every month at 6:15pm.

Please bring a plate to share.

All are invited for this service.

Dear Members,
